Welcome 2016 and A Goodbye!
We hope you had some pleasant and restful days and a good start into 2016.
Unfortunately for us 2016 doesn't start with good news: Starting january Stephanie will no longer be the primary news editor at The Patches Scrolls.
She started taking over around 2008, when the burden of working full-time in my regular job plus additional 4-8 hours a day to collect all the patches, keep in touch with PR agencies and doing some of the sysadmin work for the site simply became too much for me and I had to slow down. First it was just a patch here or there but over time she not only took the brunt of the brunt of the day-to-day patch workload (just checking our inventory of 5,000+ websites for new patches took 2 hours or more a day), but got involved in the sites redesign, did most of the testing when we relaunched the site around 2013 , kept in touch with our ad agencies and overall let me finally enjoy other hobbies beside the website.
Unfortunately during 2015 our ad income has dropped so low that it no longer became feasible to warrant paying the webserver fees , paying a contractor to work on redesign and adding new features and, and, and...
Partly the heavy use of Adblockers is to blame for that as some 50% of our visitors block all ads . Partly of course it's the technological progress:
Most games get their patches via Steam and Steam only, with third-party sites like ours cut off from access to these patches
Also AAA titles these days come with patches which easily surpass several Gigabytes, which are simply too large for us
What does this mean for The Patches Scrolls in 2016? Honestly, I do not know yet. Of course it'll mean patch news will arrive slower and we'll focus on less titles.
Also new features or fixes to existing ones will probably less seldom. I do no longer can afford to pay hundreds of euros a month out of my own income just so the site gets more features when our ad revenue doesn't pick up either or drops even further.
Further than that, I cannot say. Of course we'll offer new Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines patches by Wesp5 as long as there is interest and of course we'll offer new patches to Euro Truck Simulator 2 as long as SCS is making them. And of course we'll offer all those 20,000+ patches from our archives and will try to add new downloads as well
And if more of you are adding us to your Adblocker whitelist, we might be able to do even more.
And if anyone is willing to help with the site, be it patch supplier, comment spam remover or otherweise involved, drop me a line.

Thanks for the patches guys :) Its amazing you are still around. You are one of the few original 1990s websites still going. But as Bob Dylan sang, the times they are a changing :(
Goodbye & Best wishes.
The old diehard generation of gamers is over. It's the new age of streamlined BS.
Websites like these are a relic of the old times when gaming required 2 brain cells.
Thank you for all your hard work. It will never be forgotten. People like you is what allowed gaming to survive in the dark ages for the plebs today to enjoy it on their thumb-twiddling device. Because the lowest common denominator is the biggest market target.
just discovered this site and it was very useful, great job
Nothing but good wishes to you. Since I powered on my first computer, running the DX486 CPU in 1992, I dont believe there has ever been a site that made getting patches to games young and old like yours.
You need not explain anything but we the gaming public owe you a big show of gratitude for this altruistic achievement.
May good fortune follow you always
Thanks for the site! I haven't been gaming much in recent years, but whenever I do play something, usually old, and look for patches, this is the only destination site I remember by name. :)
It's a shame how many modern games have become volatile and disposable, with always in flux patching, and no clean version you can archive nicely offline.
I don't block ads in general, but I do manually block specific domains that are the source of animated or Javascript-based ads that slow the browser down. Maybe use Google ads? They also started with animated junk, but there's still pure-text or static images ones as well.
Well, as long as the site isn't costing too much money, we'll keep it up. We actually got an offer or two to host the entire archive, but right now it's no urgent matter for us.
If you decide to close the site, try giving all the patches to the Internet Archive.
Ironically, I had to use the ad blocker to post here because the captcha wasn't working with the ads enabled.
Anyway, thanks for all these years of service :)

The sad truth is: Selling your own ad space no longer works if you can't offer a publisher substantial reach (we're talking hundreds of thousands of visitors per month). I stopped trying to sell my own ad space some 10 years ago , because I'd make 50 euros or less for untold numbers of extra hours work which doesn't even cover hosting. And ad prices have since then dropped to less than 10% of what we could earn this way in 2006. Running your own ad server and maintaining ad campaigns there (if your're lucky to get any) is a full-time job if you want to earn more than a few cents a month: talking to publishers, getting ad space adjusted to advertiser needs, checking campaign results, optimizing ad delivery, etc... Thanks for the suggestion, but like I said - it's not a feasible option. Nor is paid download access - Fileplanet stopped their services years ago because paid downloads do not work anymore.
Been a user for almost a decade....appreciate all the effort everyone has put in - you are all unsung heroes!!
I've turned Ad-Blocker off for this site, hope you stay around for many more years
Sorry I have little sympathy. How about if web sites stop using ad networks and sell ad space for static ads like they did in the old days. A little more work sure but much higher revenue potential plus less objectionable than the junk the corporate world of marketing shoves down our throats without an ad blocker installed. If you approach some AAA game publishers or hardware manufacturers with your page stats I'm sure they'd be glad to buy some space on your pages for static ads.
THANKS for work.
I appreciate the 4 or 5 downloads I have gotten here over the years for games like Dawn of War and older. Sadly though the time for patches being manual for the most part and third parties on this is over really. :(Thanks for doing what you did patches :) Love you forever.
I must admit I don't know this site very well, but you should consider creating a page to receive donations. A lot of streamers receive decent amounts from their audience.
users will understand maybe if u ask them to either deactivate their ad blocks or make a small donation to site
if they can ...hopy things go well for you guys in 2016
Alot of people using adblock do not know you can deactivate adblock for certain pages. Might want to make a public announcement asking users to do that. Good luck guys! Came here looking for old Diablo 2 patches pre 1.13 but couldnt find any, but a very great website nonetheless!
Thank you for your wonderful service. I hope you find a way to continue.
This site hosts some very valuable software in terms of culture and history.
How about adding Patreon or other ways to donate?
Just deactivated my adblocker for patches-scrolls. I have been using your site for years now. I would hate to see you go away. Your site has been an unsung hero for the gaming and modding community. It would be great if you could get some sort of traffic influx- perhaps from a popular youtuber or streamer who has used this site. I used to put out playthrough videos a few years ago and would link to your site all the time. Thanks for all you've done, and please don't go away.
Thx for all these years, and i hope for more years i like your side and wish you luck and health
guys you are awesome
The site has been in my favorites tabs for several years, and I hope it'll stay there for more years. :) Best of luck to you!
Sorry to read that. Good luck mate! :)
